They are essentially a partial concentric lift from a deeper position until some form of stoppers block the lift just before the athlete performs a maximal PIMA. Again, I've only done the muscle vs muscle kind but my gut tells be the barbell in the rack method would be better. Bob Hoffman of York barbell popularised isotonic isometrics in the 1960s. Steve Justa's articles on them re-kindled my interest and now I believe they have a some value in an all around program. I got my first taste of isometrics (muscle vs muscle not using barbells in the rack) in high school then stopped as I didn't think they had much worth. Bill March was the poster boy for York's isometric program but as Bud said, once people found out those guys were on D-Bol, the "magic" faded. also the "functional" or weighted uses are just plain hard!īudI haven't read Fair's stuff either but Bill Starr has written of this also and his account agrees with what Bud says. I do a ton of isometrics and they are awesome and CAN stand alone, but you still have to practice a lift and lift heavy if you want to see the benefit. meaning that you didn't need to do anything else and you'd suddenly be magically strong. I think they also messed up peoples thoughts on isometrics by selling basic static isos as the end all be all of training WHEN DONE ALONE. my understanding is that when everybody found out about the drugs those guys were using the baby got thrown out with the bathwater, so to speak. I haven't read too much of John Fair's stuff like Kim suggested and that probably has the answer.
